    The overarching goal of Dr. Puls’ research agenda is to reduce child maltreatment, particularly physical abuse among infants and young children. In pursuit of this goal, he is actively engaged in research investigating public policies and programs with the capacity to improve the well-being of children and families. He is also interested in improving the equitable and accurate identification and reporting of child maltreatment within health care systems.

    Dr. Puls completed a NICHD R25-funded Summer Training Institute for Research in Child Abuse and Neglect in 2017 and graduated from the Academic Pediatric Association’s Research Scholars Program in 2020.

    Protective Factors Against Child Maltreatment and Engagement in Home Visiting
    Role Description: This study aims to 1) compare the frequency of protective factors against child maltreatment among new mothers with and without individual risk factors for abuse, by levels of cumulative risk, and by race/ethnicity, and 2) determine which protective and risk factors and which combination of factors are most associated with voluntary engagement in the home visiting. Study results should provide better clarity on how well (or not well) home visiting is engaging families at the greatest risk for abuse and their capacity to benefit from programming. In turn, our results should be able to inform recruitment strategies and possibly improve the efficacy of home visiting in the future.
