Overview Research Dr. Kyler is an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, a clinician-researcher in the Division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine, and a Pediatric Clinical Pharmacology fellow supported by Children's Mercy Kansas City's prestigious T32 training grant. Her research interests centers on how obesity affects outcomes and drug response for children with asthma and obesity, including investigations of disparities in clinical outcomes, drug dosing problems, drug pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics, and adverse events among this population of children. She has experience in health services and clinical research and has utilized varying large administrative and clinical datasets in her research.

Variation in medication dosing and guideline adherence by weight status for commonly prescribed medications during pediatric asthma hospitalizations
Role Description: This investigation utilized a large, nationally representative retrospective database (Cerner Health Facts®) to examine rates of dosing guideline non-adherence in corticosteroids prescribed to hospitalized children with asthma based on weight status, with a special focus on children with obesity. We found that children with obesity are more likely to receive steroid doses that do not adhere to national dosing guidelines. These findings highlight the need for focused study of medications with high degrees of prescribing practice variation in children with obesity that could be putting this population of children at higher risk of adverse events.
