A structurally diverse group of endogenous molecules that includes the HMGB1 PROTEIN; S100 PROTEINS; HSP60, Hsp70, Cathelicidin, IL-33, and DEFENSINS. They are constitutively available, released upon tissue damage, and activate the immune system. Uncontrolled and excessive release of alarmins may contribute to INFLAMMATION; CARCINOGENESIS, and NEOPLASM METASTASIS. Alarmins are also critical for heart and nerve tissue homeostasis.
