research overview Daniel Forsha, MD is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Ward Family Heart Center at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. His broad research interests include the use of non-invasive imaging to measure patient outcomes in congenital heart disease with a special interest in measuring the beneficial impact of various types of exercise in this population. His research career began in a yeast bench research lab at the University of Colorado studying the interactions of a molecular chaperone protein before transitioning to clinical research during his pediatric residency and cardiology fellowship at Duke. Currently, Dr Forsha is the Director of Cardiovascular Imaging Research within the Heart Center and Co-Chairs the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE) Research Committee. His current and past research support is over one million dollars from the NIH, Additional Ventures Single Ventricle Research Fund, AHA, and a philanthropic donor. These funds support his research across multiple areas: 1) the impact of exercise and fitness on outcomes in the Down syndrome population, 2) the relationship between skeletal muscle health and Fontan fitness levels and cardiac function in the single ventricle population, 3) the effect of COVID on the heart as part of the Pediatric Heart Network MUSIC and CAMP studies, and 4) evaluating the negative effects of ventricular electro-mechanical dyssynchrony on cardiac function. This research has translated into over 40 peer reviewed publications and book chapters. He has regularly been invited to give educational and research lectures at conferences for the ASE, AHA, ACC, World Congress, and Euro-Echo. Dr. Forsha also mentor's young researchers in the field at Children’s Mercy, through his work at the ASE and the PRIISM initiative.
