research overview Tarak Srivastava, MD, Director of the Nephrology Research Laboratory at Children’s Mercy and Professor of Pediatrics, University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine, supported by R01 funding from the National Institutes for Health (NIH), is making important discoveries pertaining to CKD progression, with lab research focused on podocyte cell biology, its role in the pathophysiology and potential treatment of hyperfiltration injury. His research also focuses on the role of innate immunity in idiopathic nephrotic syndrome of childhood, and in kidney development. While research on these subjects transcends into the adult world, Dr. Srivastava is one of only a handful of nephrologists focused on identifying and mitigating the risk factors for chronic kidney disease in children.
