research overview Dr. Chakawa is a Clinical Psychologist at Children’s Mercy and an Assistant Professor at the University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine. Her current research focuses on addressing the impact of child and adolescent behavioral health disparities and improving access to care, particularly for populations who have been disadvantaged (e.g., racially and ethnically minoritized and socioeconomically underprivileged) due to a history of systemic inequalities in the United States (U.S.). Her research-informed clinical focus is grounded in cultural responsiveness in program development, clinical assessment/treatment, and community-engaged intervention to address barriers to behavioral health treatment seeking and service utilization. She leads the ongoing program development research for an integrated primary care program within an inner-city setting. Dr. Chakawa has authored numerous publications and presentations pertaining to cultural diversity. In 2020, she received the Children’s Mercy inaugural “Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Achievement Early Career Award” in recognition of her years of commitment to and engagement in culturally inclusive clinical, research, and advocacy initiatives. In 2022, she was selected as the first DEI Scholar Awardee at Children's Mercy!
