research overview Dr. Chavez-Bueno’s current research work focuses on the pathogenesis of E. coli sepsis in newborns. Her overall research goal is to identify novel virulence factors relevant to the pathogen’s ability to invade the bloodstream causing neonatal sepsis. Her studies utilize in vitro and animal models designed to characterize the bacterial components that determine invasion and trafficking across epithelial barriers and interaction with gut various components of innate and adaptive immune responses. Whole-genome sequencing analyses are also utilized in her laboratory to better understand virulence properties, antibiotic resistance and the molecular epidemiology of invasive E. coli strains. She also studies mechanisms by which prebiotics and prebiotics protect against neonatal sepsis, and their use in novel formulations for clinical applications. Dr. Chavez-Bueno is an elected member of the Society for Pediatric Research and elected fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
