Themes from Resident Reflections of a Family Immersion Experience
Biography Overview Every pediatric intern spends an evening with a patient's family in their home to learn from a short-term empathy immersion experience. The residents are then debriefed by Patient and Family Engagement Program Managers, who are parents-on-staff, in a structured facilitated interview. These debriefings are transcribed by the parents-on-staff. We plan to perform thematic analysis on the previous 10 years of reflection debriefings to evaluate the strongest lessons highlighted by the learners. This information will inform the creation of a prospective study of residents' patient- and family-centered care (including empathy) at baseline (prior to immersion), post immersion, and at the end of residency.
