    Dr. De Luca's main research interest has been study of the molecular mechanisms governing longitudinal bone growth and, in turn, statural growth. Most of his research findings,obtained in vitro and in whole animal models,have elucidated the function of many paracrine (local) factors expressed in the cartilaginous growth plate of the long bones. These factors modulate growth plate chondrocyte proliferation and hypertrophy/differentiation, which are the main cellular events responsible for bone elongation.

    Another research interest of Dr. De Luca's is the study of the metabolic derangements associated with pediatric obesity. Specifically, his research group focused its attention especially on less known aspects of insulin resistance in children, such as sleep disorders, pre-hypertension, and oxidative stress. He is currently contributing to a number of research projects led by other faculty in his division on the efficacy and safety of metformin in children with a high risk to develop metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
