Overview Research In 1993, Dr. Truog was recruited to Children’s Mercy-Kansas City/University of Missouri Kansas City School of Medicine as the Hospital’s first Physician Scientist, a then new position created to recruit productive physician scholars to Kansas City to expand the focus of the Hospital’s mission by integrating translational and clinical research into clinical practice. During his tenure in Kansas City, Dr. Truog has continued his research on pulmonary disorders, with greater emphasis on clinical research, including phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials and outcomes-based research on critically ill newborns. This work has been supported by multiple federal grants including from both the NHLBI and the NICHD, and by other external competitive awards, with funding totaling ~$5,500,000 since 2000. Dr Truog has served as the Principal Investigator for the Children’s Mercy-Kansas City/University of Kansas site of the NIH Neonatal Research Network and a member of that organization’s steering committee. Participating on planning, executive and steering committees of multiple multi-center clinical trials has given Dr. Truog expertise in the benefits and pitfalls of prospective clinical research. Dr. Truog has planned and participated in pivotal multicenter trials testing the roles of high frequency ventilation, of inhaled nitric oxide in term and preterm infants, and of steroid treatment for amelioration of BPD.
